What To Know Before You Move

Building and designing a new home is one thing, but having to move into that home is a whole different ball game. From packing up your old home, to deciding what you want to take or donate, to unpacking everything into your new home, moving is something that no one really looks forward too. In fact, moving is considered to be one of the top stressors in life, and for good reason. At Sterling Creek Builders, we are custom home designers located in the central Texas area. Not only do we help you customize your dream home, but we also want to make sure that everything you do during this process runs as smoothly as possible, which is why we’re offering you these moving tips! Make A Plan

Before you start packing up everything, sit down and come up with a game plan for your move. It’s easiest to pack up one room at a time so that you can truly focus on one project. Think about which rooms you use the least. Maybe this is the guest bedroom or the storage closet in the main hall. Packing up rooms like this will allow you to still be able to utilize all the things you do need. They also tend to have the least amount of items in them, so they’re relatively quick to pack up. Make a list of each room that you want to tackle — your bedroom and kitchen will probably be the last rooms to pack up since you use them the most.

Take Photos of The Rooms Before Packing

We’ve all been there before. You’re moving everything into your new home and suddenly you’re unsure of where to put everything. The placement of bigger items such as your bed, dresser, and desk can truly make or break the aesthetic of a room, which is why it is so important to take photos of the rooms before you pack them up. Even if you’re wanting to experiment with a different layout, having the original layout can help give you ideas, or it’s just an easy way to make sure everything goes back where it should.

Figure Out What To Donate

Moving is a great time to declutter your home. Most of us are surprised at how much we’ve accumulated throughout the years. Instead of bringing everything with you, go through your things and figure out what you want to keep and what you want to donate. You’ll probably also have to throw some things out due to normal wear and tear, but many of our household items can be donated and reused. Depending on their conditions, you may even be able to sell these items to consignment shops or online, and who doesn’t want more money?

Yes, it can be a pain to load everything into your car and drive it to the nearest donation facility. You may not even have room either. However, many donation centers have free services that come to you, load your things, and take them away, making it super easy to get rid of your gently used household items.

Gather Your Moving Supplies

There are so many things that you find yourself needing when moving, such as boxes, containers, packaging tape, bubble wrap, and more. You’ll also probably find that you need more of these things than you originally thought, which is why gathering your supplies early is best.

Moving supplies can also add up quickly. Don’t fork over your hard-earned money for cardboard boxes. Look for free moving boxes at local recycling drop off points. You’ll most likely be able to find plenty of boxes that have been tossed by neighbors. Grocery stores or other large market stores like Walmart, Target, and CostCo, may also be able to provide you with free boxes.

Speak With Moving Companies

If you’ve never worked with a moving company, you may want to. Moving companies make it so much easier to move. Moving companies are also equipped to help you move larger items like your bed, dressers, and mirrors. You’ll also want to call several companies to see how much it is going to cost you. If you’re moving at a high season times like January or August (if you’re living near a college campus) you’ll want to book the movers early too.
