Making The Most of Your Move

Picture this, you’ve just finished building the most beautiful custom home courtesy of Sterling Creek Builders. While your new home is absolutely stunning and ready to move into, you have to pack up all your things from your old home and bring it to your new place. The thought of having to put all of your belongings in boxes all within a few short days can be exhausting. However, timing is everything, and while moving won’t completely stress-free, your move can be made a bit easier with these tips and tricks. Keep reading to learn more!

However long the packing is going to take depends on a few factors. It depends on the size of your current home, how minimalist or maximalist your decor is, and the amount of any large items that you may have, like couches, pianos, tables, etc. For example, if you’re packing up a studio apartment, it’s not going to take nearly the amount of time as packing up a four-bedroom house. We always say to give yourself more time than you think you’ll need. You’ll also want to consider what type of fragile items you may be transporting. While you may prefer to power pack and get it all done in one night, doing it like this can make you easily forget things or pack things the wrong way which can also lead to negative side effects.

Before you pack, you’ll want to make sure that you have all your packing supplies ready. This way you won’t have to rush out in the middle of the night and try to find a store that is open and sells packing tape. So, before you start packing, make sure you have all of these things:

  • Boxes and/or plastic containers
  • Packing tape
  • Packing materials (newspapers, bubble wrap, tissue paper, etc.)
  • Trash bags, extra-large are best
  • Some type of container dedicated to donation items, trash, etc.

Four Weeks Until Moving Day

Starting about a month in advance will give you a good amount of time to pack. Any more time ahead, and you might find yourself having to unpack things that you find yourself needing later. Packing a month ahead can help alleviate that annoyance for you. At the four week mark, you can start packing things that you know you aren’t going to be using within the time before you move.

Start with rooms that don’t get as much use such as the basement, storage closets, attic, etc. This is also a great time to start packing up any seasonal items. If it’s summer, you can easily start packing up your winter clothes and items and vice versa. Any items that you know you won’t be using are fair game to pack up. Plus packing these items ahead of time will make sure that they’re not left forgotten.

Three Weeks Until Moving Day

At this point, you can start to pack decor items. Paintings, posters, any other wall art, or home decor pieces should be packed sooner rather than later. Some of these items may need to be packed in a special way, especially if they’re fragile. So give yourself extra time when packing these items so they don’t get ruined. We also recommend that any books, movies, DVDs, office supplies, hobby equipment, and anything that you don’t need to keep out for the next two weeks should be packed at this time.

Two Weeks Until Moving Day

At this point, you may be feeling the stress. But, luckily for you, you’ve already started packing, right? Two weeks before you move, you’ll want to start tackling the bigger rooms, like bedrooms, kitchens, office spaces, etc. Seriously go through your things and sort out what you’ll be using for the next week and what you won’t. Be harsh on your decisions, it’s better to overpack everything and if you find yourself really needing that shirt, you can go back and pull it out. You also want to make sure you’re going through all your drawers and any other nooks and crannies that you may have stored things. This is a great time to go through your food storage. Start to see what you can use, in order to have to move less of it. If you have a lot of fresh food that needs to be refrigerated, start to use that up! It may seem as if it’s an easy thing to move, but it’s probably going to add at least one more box and at that point, every box counts.

One Week Until Moving Day

You’ve made it to the final stages! At this point, we recommend packing up any loads of laundry you’ve completed, more items you won’t be using within the next few days, and anything else that you can start to put away. If you’re going to be in between homes for a few days, make sure you have everything you need for that too.

Day Of Your Move

You made it! You probably feel slightly like a chicken with its head cut off running around, but you did it! On this day, pack up any toiletries, clothes, food, and anything else that’s been left in your home. While there may be a few unexpected things that come up, you’ll be able to sort those things out with no problem and you can finally enjoy your new home!
